    Job Outlook [+]

Employment of health information technicians is expected to increase by 22% from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for healthcare information services is expected to increase due to the aging baby-boomer population and the expansion of insurance coverage through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Employment change. A large aging population will need more medical tests, treatments and procedures. This will also mean more claims for reimbursement from private and public insurance. As consumers are encouraged to claim ownership of their medical information via the use of patient portals and government incentives encourage the transition to electronic health records, the demand for more health information technicians to organize and manage health information will be necessary in all healthcare settings.
