Manufacturing Development Center Moving from Lanier Technical College to Brenau University

Will become the Business Incubator at Brenau University

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (June 12, 2018) - The Manufacturing Development Center, an entity of Lanier Technical College, will become part of Brenau University on July 1. Ray Perren, President of Lanier Tech, made the announcement before the Economic Development Committee of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce on Friday, June 8. Though formal oversight will be housed with Brenau University, Lanier Tech will continue to partner with the center through shared resources.

"This move will grant the center the opportunity to continue to expand its reach beyond the foundation we've laid during its time at Lanier Tech" Perren said. "We are eager to see the center solicit new clients who are ready to make a lasting impact on our community. It has been an incredible project."

The Manufacturing Development Center has served as a business incubator and accelerator through providing clients rental space, access to assistance with managing business financials and other business management resources since 2007.

"We at Brenau University are appreciative of the robust foundation Lanier Technical College established for this center," said Brenau University President Ed Schrader. "Our vision for what will be known as the Business Incubator at Brenau University is to create maximum opportunity for business and education partnerships addressing complex ideas and information and discovering innovative applications of technology, best practices and creative trends in business formation, wealth building and job creation. These entrepreneurial efforts ultimately will all support the economic development of Gainesville and Hall County, Georgia."

The Business Incubator at Brenau University will remain at the Featherbone Communiversity, which was founded by Gainesville business leader Gus Whalen who died in 2015. The communiversity is a partnership of local schools and businesses Whalen began after he sold his business in 2005. Brenau University's Mary Inez Grindle School of Nursing was the first tenant at Featherbone, and Schrader says the business incubator and the partnering between Brenau and Lanier Technical College are exactly the kind of collaborations that Whalen envisioned.

Schrader said that the mission of the Business Incubator at Brenau University will be to provide direct assistance to small and startup companies in the establishment of their business enterprise in a rapidly changing world. Faculty and students of Brenau University will be involved with these businesses on various and appropriate levels. Incubator goals will be to enhance business growth and to increase the prospect of a client company's commercial success in the marketplace, while training and educating business and community leaders of tomorrow. Educational formats may include one-on-one coaching, expert support, student internships, capstone projects, special events and networking that teaches innovation and enables real-world results and jobs.
