All Learning Support classes will be listed in the course offerings as 0090. There will be only three Learning Support classes: English 0090, Math 0090, and Reading 0090. Learning Support classes will have 3 contact hours and 3 credit hours.

  1. When a student is accepted to Lanier Technical College, he/she will take the placement test. It is highly recommended that Learning Support students be administered the COMPASS rather than the ASSET.
  2. The Admissions Office will send the student an acceptance letter saying that the student is accepted into a diploma, degree, or TCC, and, based on the entrance scores, must take Learning Support classes in English, Math, and/or Reading.
  3. Academic advisors will place the student in the appropriate class/es — Reading 0090, English 0090, or Math 0090 — based on the scores and program.
  4. (a) In English and Reading an individualized, self-paced program of instruction for each student will be set up by pretests for each of modules 1-4 in English and three pretests of combined skills in Reading. The individualized programs will be based on the pretest results and outcome objective of the student (course in the area indicated in his/her TCC, diploma, degree). All students in English 0090 are required to successfully complete all of the skills work in modules 1-4 by passing all posttests with at least 80%. After modules 1-4 have been successfully completed, the student may take the mastery check. When the mastery check has been passed with at least 70%, the "Diploma" student must complete module 6 with 80% on the posttests and write a complete paragraph. The "Degree" student must complete module 7 with atleast 80% on the postests and write a complete essay. The grade for the final writing assignment must be 70% or higher. The average for all work completed in the class must be 70% or above. Any student with an average below 70 % is not eligible to take the mastery check. Students below 70% on the mastery check may study and retake the mastery check again. Students who do not complete the assigned work or pass the mastery check in one semester will receive the grade of "D". They can resume their studies the next semester.
  1. (b) Students in Reading are administered three pretests to determine specific module learning needs. Students work through each module independently. Then the student takes the module posttest and must demonstrate mastery of 80% on the posttest to move forward to the next module. The grade for each module completed must be 80% or the work must be repeated. The average for all work completed in the class must be 70% or above; any student with an average below 70% on course assignments is not eligible to take the final exam. After modules 1- 28 have been successfully completed with 80% on the posttests, the student may take the final exam. The final exam is comprehensive. Students must pass the final exam with at least 70%. If all assignments are not completed in a semester, the final exam is not administered and the student will receive a "D" for the course. They can resume their studies the next semester.
  2. All new MATH 0090 students will take a cumulative test based on modules 1 – 6. If the student scores 80% or above, then he/she begins on module 7. If not, the student will begin on module 1. All returning students begin each semester where they left off the previous semester. Students take a pretest for each module and if they score 90% or above, they may move to the next module. If they score below 90%, then they will complete that module's assignments and then take a posttest. If a score of 80% or above is attained on the posttest, the student moves on to the next module. If not, additional work will be given and then the student will test again.
  3. If a student does not complete the assigned material within the 15 week semester, he/she must repeat the course the next semester and continue with the work which was assigned the previous semester. In rare circumstances, a student may be assigned a grade of "I" and given until the mid-term of the next semester to complete the work. These should be unusual personal circumstances which prevent a student, who otherwise would have successfully completed all of the work, from doing so. In addition, for Math 0090 students, they will be given a grade based on the number of modules they have completed if they have reached certain check points.
  4. Once an English or Reading student has completed the assigned modules and demonstrated mastery through the final exam for the course, his/her grade is entered into Banner. This grade indicates completion of the course for his/her current program. Math 0090 students completing all modules must also pass the COMPASS with a score of 37. This information will then be entered into his/her Banner record showing that he/she is prepared to take the specific course for which he/she has prepared.
  5. Each instructor will record his/her students' grades in the final grade area of Banner Web and the instructor will also record their grades with a numerical value following it in the midterm grade section of Banner Web following the guideline listed below.
    • For students completing what has previously been noted as a 097 course, their grade in the midterm field will be followed by a 1.
    • For students completing what has previously been noted as a 098 course, their grade in the midterm field will be followed by a 2.
    • For students completing what has previously been noted as a 099 course, their grade in the midterm field will be followed by a 3.

  6. When an academic advisor is assisting this student with registration for his/her General Education classes after the completion of Learning Support, the academic advisor must be sure to check the Banner records to see which course the student is prepared to take.
  7. If a student changes his/her program of study, and the required English or Math courses change, the student may be required to retake the appropriate 0090 course to prepare for the credit course he/she needs under the new program. Any student who completes the diploma-level modules early will be offered the opportunity to complete the remaining degree level modules.

Any English or Reading student who does not get a passing grade on the final exam or who does not take the final because all work is not completed will receive a "D" for the course and will need to retake the class. .
