7.1.2lp6 Public Safety: Uniform Dress Code

  1. PURPOSE
    1. Establish rules and regulations regarding agency uniform, equipment and personal appearance.
    2. Establish employee accountability for agency uniform and equipment.
    3. Establish an agency dress code and employee personal appearance guidelines.
  2. RULES
    1. General
      1. Sworn employees will wear the designated, and agency provided, uniform when reporting for duty, while on duty, and during any authorized special assignment. When the uniform is worn, care shall be taken that it fits well, is neat, clean, properly pressed, and that all leather and metal items are polished and in presentable order. This includes the Class "A", Class "A" Dress, and Class "B" uniforms. Any uniform pieces in disrepair will be replaced by the agency as possible. (GLECP 4.11)
      2. Employees of the Agency shall be neat in appearance and well groomed.
      3. While wearing the uniform, employees shall maintain a professional appearance.
      4. While in uniform Officers shall not inter-mix items of civilian clothing as an outer garment, unless specifically authorized by the Chief of Police or his designee.
      5. Officers are responsible for the general care and maintenance of uniforms and equipment.
      6. When an Officer resigns, or is terminated, all agency uniforms and equipment will be turned in to The Chief of Police, or his designee. All returned items will be in the same condition as when issued (except for normal wear and tear). All uniforms will be laundered or dry cleaned before returned. All issued property remains the property of the Lanier Technical College Police Department, and must be turned in before the issuance of a final paycheck.
    2. Grooming Standards
      1. Hair will always be clean and neatly groomed, and present a professional appearance. Hair shall not be worn in any non-conventional fashion or style (i.e., pigtails, dreadlocks, mohawks, or dyes that are not natural hair colors).
      2. Hair will not be worn in such a manner as not to create an officer safety issue while on duty. Hair that extends beyond the collar could potentially be used to control an officer in a fight.
      3. Mustaches and beards are discretionary. When worn they will be well trimmed and not excessively thick. Beards must be trimmed close to the face and not extend to or beyond the neck.
    3. Jewelry
      1. No jewelry shall be worn which would interfere with an officer's ability to perform his/her duties or that would create a safety hazard.
    4. Uniform Classifications
      1. The Class "A" uniform will consist of the following:
        1. Blue dress uniform shirt (short or long sleeve).
        2. Blue dress uniform pants.
        3. Black socks.
        4. Black Patent Leather shoes.
        5. Black pants belt.
        6. Black leather gun belt with holster, magazine and cuff case, or issued paddle holster and cuff/magazine case.
        7. 8-point uniform Police hat.
      2. The Class "A" dress uniform will consist of the following:
        1. White dress uniform shirt (long sleeve).
        2. Blue dress uniform pants.
        3. Blue dress uniform jacket (buttoned).
        4. Black socks.
        5. Black Patent Leather shoes.
        6. Black pants belt.
        7. Black leather gun belt and holster. (A black patent leather pants belt in combination with a concealed holster may also be worn).
        8. 8-point uniform Police hat.
        9. White gloves.
      3. The Class "B" uniform will consist of the following:
        1. Blue "Polo" type shirt.
        2. Tan "BDU" type pants.
        3. Black socks.
        4. Black shoes or boots.
        5. Black pants belt.
        6. Black leather gun belt with holster, magazine and cuff case, or issued paddle holster and cuff/magazine case.
        7. Police "baseball" type Police cap (optional).
      4. Uniform Shirt Accessories
        1. Uniform shirt accessories consist of the following:
          1. Badges, which will be worn on Class A, B, and Class A dress uniform shirts and Class A dress jackets. Class B shirts will have a sewn-on badge patch.
          2. Sewn-on Police shoulder patches will be worn on both left and right shoulders of Class A, and Class A dress uniform shirts and
          3. Gold in color or brass name plates with black lettering will be worn centered parallel with the seam at the top of the flat of the right breast pocket on Class A, and Class A dress uniforms and jacket. Names will be embroidered on Class B shirts, along with "Lanier Technical College Police Department" on the right breast.
          4. Collar brass or insignias, will be worn on Class A, and Class A dress uniform shirts. Collar insignias will be positioned on the collar just inside the seams at the corner of the collar perpendicular with the other collar corner.
          5. An American Flag pin will be worn centered on the left pocket flap of the Class "A" Uniform Shirt (both short sleeve and long sleeve).
          6. Whistle and Snake Type Whistle Chains will be worn on the right shoulder button under the epaulet falling into the inside of the right pocket.
          7. Awards - Pins designated and approved by the Chief of Police indicating E.M.T. Training, firearms, etc., will be worn on the (right/left) pocket flap, parallel to the top of the pocket.
          8. Any other insignia, patch, or emblem not indicated in this policy, must have prior approval from the Chief of Police before being displayed on the uniform.
        2. Rank Insignias
          1. Rank Insignia for Class A, and Class A dress uniform shirts will be embroidered "Epaulet Boards" And will be worn on both the right and left shoulder epaulet.
          2. Rank insignias For Class A dress jackets will be gold or brass in color, and will be worn on both The right and left shoulder epaulet positioned ½ inch from the outer epaulet seam.
          3. Rank insignias for Class B winter jacket will be gold or brass in color, and may be worn on the collar. They will be positioned on the collar just inside the seams at the corner of the collar perpendicular with the other collar corner.
        3. Court Dress
          1. Uniform or business formal attire, presenting a professional appearance, shall be worn in court.
        4. Body Armor (GLECP 6.2)
          1. Body armor will be made available to all sworn personnel. Officers are required/encouraged, at the discretion of the Chief of Police, to wear their body armor, this includes the front and back ballistic panels. While in uniform performing patrol duties, and working extra duty jobs, the wearing of body armor is encouraged.
          2. Inspection/Maintenance
            1. Supervisors shall be responsible for the annual inspection of all body armor for fit, cleanliness, signs of damage, and expiration of ballistic panels.
            2. Each Officer issued body armor is responsible for the proper storage, and daily inspection of their body armor for signs of damage and general cleanliness.
            3. Any damage or wear to the cover or to the ballistic panels will be reported to the Officers immediate supervisor, who will in return report the damage/wear to the Chief of Police.
